Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand Writing Award

$2,000 prize

Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand (CLPINZ) invites submissions to its inaugural annual writing award.

The purpose of the writing award is to inspire high quality writing on competition law and policy, economic regulation and consumer protection, build interest in these subjects among students and young practitioners, and recognise talent.

The writing award is open to:

  • any undergraduate or postgraduate student who was enrolled at a New Zealand university in the 12 months prior to the submission deadline; and
  • any other person who graduated no more than 5 years ago and was employed in New Zealand in the 12 months prior to the submission deadline.

Essays completed as part of university course work are eligible.

Essays may address any aspect of competition law and policy, economic regulation or consumer protection from an economic, legal or any other perspective. They should be between 3,000 and 15,000 words in length.

Entry eligibility and prizes shall be decided at the sole discretion of the panel. The panel may decide not to award a prize in any year.

In addition to the $2,000 prize, the winner will be invited to the next CLPINZ annual conference and offer the opportunity to have their winning entry published in the proceedings of the CLPINZ conference. The winner will be recognised at the CLPINZ conference, and the panel may invite the winner to present their essay at the conference. Reasonable domestic travel costs may be met, at the panel’s discretion.

The panel, at its discretion, may also invite the author of the runner-up to the next CLPINZ annual conference and offer the opportunity to have their winning entry published in the proceedings of the CLPINZ conference.

Deadline for submission is 1 March 2024.
